This step-by-step walkthrough demonstrates how to create a recording for Canvas using Panopto on a Mac. Alternatively, you can view a short Panopto video walkthrough.
Step 1. Open Panopto
Click the green Panopto Recordings icon () in the rich content editor—the toolbar above the area for entering text (such as you will see when composing a post in a discussion forum).
Step 2. Select the Record Tab
The Panopto Recordings window will pop up. Sign in using your Canvas credentials if prompted. Then, select Record.
Step 3. Prepare to Record
Download and install Panopto if you have not already done so. Consult the "Download Panopto" Guide for help. Title your presentation using the following format: [your last name] — [presentation title], like "Harrison — Developing Soft Skills."
Step 4. Launch the Recording App
Click the Record button. This opens the Panopto application.
Step 5. Select Your Video and Audio Inputs
Select your webcam from the Video drop-down menu. Make sure your webcam video is displayed in the Primary Sources preview window.
Select your microphone from the Audio drop-down menu and test your audio input by speaking a few words. The audio meter (green, yellow, and red bars next to the video) will light up when detecting sound. Adjust the volume slider until the audio levels are in the upper green to yellow range.

Step 6. Add Secondary Video Sources
To record a video input aside from your webcam, select one of two options.
- Select your display from the Source drop-down menu in Secondary Sources to record your screen.
- Select Record PowerPoint or Record Keynote in Slides to record a slide deck.
If you are recording only your webcam, leave the Secondary Sources checkboxes unselected.
For further information on recording slides, see the Capture a Slideshow Guide.
Step 7. Begin Recording
Click Record and begin your presentation. Minimize Panopto if you are capturing your screen.
Additional Note: If you make a mistake and want to start your presentation again, you can. But don't stop recording. Simply start your presentation from the beginning. Panopto has a trimming feature that allows you to easily remove the beginning and end of your video after you have finished recording.
Step 8. Stop Recording
Click Stop when you’re finished presenting.
Step 9. Upload Your Recording
Confirm the title in the Session Name field and add an optional description. Click the Upload button to upload your recording.
Additional Note: After uploading, your recording will take some time to process. Please be patient.
Step 10. Review Your Presentation
You can preview your recording in the Preview panel at the bottom-right of the Panopto app. Links to View Online or and Edit (e.g., trim) your session will appear in the Recording Details panel after your recording is uploaded and processed.
For further information on trimming your presentation, see the Trim Your Video Guide.
Step 11. Submit Your Presentation
To insert your Panopto video in the Canvas discussion forum, return to the Panopto Recordings window in Canvas. Click the Insert button to add the video to your post.
The Panopto Recordings window will close. Click the Post Reply button in the discussion forum to submit your discussion post.
Step 12. Review Your Discussion Post
Your session will be ready to watch once processing is complete. This normally takes a few minutes.
